Mamatashankar

A world renowned dancer, choreographer and an actress in Indian cinema, she has acted in films by directors including Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen. She is the daughter of legendary dancers Uday Shankar and the niece of Ravi Shankar. She made her film debut with Mrigayaa in 1976, directed by Mrinal Sen. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. She later won National awards for other performances.

Mamata runs the Udayan – Mamta Shankar Dance Company (founded in 1986) and the ‘Mamata Shankar Ballet Troupe'(1978) and travels extensively throughout the world.
